There is something magical about Thanksgiving at Lake Oconee. Perhaps it’s the crisp autumn air, the beauty of the changing leaves, or the excitement of the holiday season just around the corner. But for me, the real magic has never been about the decorations, the perfectly roasted turkey, or even the delicious food we share. It has always been about the people who gather around our table and the community we are fortunate enough to call home.
As empty nesters, my husband Ted and I have discovered a whole new appreciation for Thanksgiving. There is nothing quite like the anticipation of welcoming our children, Stu and Remi, home again. The house that has grown quieter suddenly comes alive with conversation, laughter and the wonderful chaos of having everyone under one roof.
Having called Lake Oconee home for three decades, I have watched our community grow and evolve in extraordinary ways. Yet what I treasure most is something that has never changed: the warmth of its people and the traditions that bring us together.
One of my favorite holiday traditions is the annual Lighting at The Ritz, when the spectacular Christmas tree illuminates the evening and children's faces light up with wonder. It is more than a tree-lighting celebration. It is a reunion of friends and families, some we have known for decades. We see children we once watched running around the lake who are now grown, returning with families of their own. It is a beautiful reminder of how quickly the years pass and how meaningful these shared moments become.
The magic continues with the gingerbread displays, the excitement of Breakfast with Santa, the joyful music of the OPAS FaLaLa Holiday Concert, and the ice-skating rink at The Ritz, where children and adults alike embrace the spirit of the season. These experiences have become part of the fabric of Lake Oconee, creating memories that span generations.
And that, to me, is what makes this community so special.
